Sgomenti e scaltri sguardi che
Ci si scambiò.
Ma non si tremò, benché sbronzi.

Una compagine strana, la Legione Fiumana,

Muri d’assenzio e tabacco per noi.

Ma già l’artiglieria il sogno spazzava via.
Tra la folla impazzita io la scorsi, smarrita.

Ed io: “Si metta in salvo, tra un po’ qui farà caldo”.
Ci fu un unico bacio, ne ebbi il sangue incendiato,
“Ora vada, perdio! Che qui è affare mio,
E, se il Cielo ci assiste, ci vedremo a Trieste”.

Col suo profumo ancora nelle nari
Incontrai il mio destino con tanti miei pari,
E un’ infilata di “fuoco fratello”
Mi colse di schiena e mi snudò il cervello…
